Reasons why a current transformer cannot be open-circuited

When a current transformer is in operation, its secondary side is typically connected to low-impedance devices such as ammeters or relays. If the secondary side of the current transformer is open-circuited, meaning no current flows, an extremely high voltage will be generated within the transformer. This could damage the equipment and even threaten the safety of personnel. Therefore, a current transformer must never be operated with an open circuit.

 

In contrast to an open circuit, a short circuit typically refers to two points at different potentials in a circuit being directly connected by a conductor. In the application of current transformers, short circuits are undesirable because they can lead to excessive current, damaging the equipment or causing safety accidents. However, compared to open circuits, short circuits are not a common risk point in current transformer operation because the system design usually incorporates sufficient overload and short-circuit protection measures.

 

When operating a current transformer, it is essential to ensure that the secondary side is always connected to prevent open circuits. Furthermore, the equipment should be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure its normal operation and reduce the risk of faults such as short circuits.
